Abruzzo Photo Exercise: 10 photos 5 minutes from home

Here’s a little exercise I like to set myself whenever I’m away. It’s to go out on foot, never straying more than five minutes from base, and try to take at least 10 photographs I like in less than 30 minutes.

The exercise is great because it causes you to look at the detail of what’s around you and in the process you may discover more about your immediate surroundings.

Abruzzo is fantastic for scenery at this time of year. Snow capped mountains, the glistening Adriatic and hilltop villages that capture the early morning sun can make stunning images.

But there’s more to Abruzzo than these “big” images. There are plenty of little details that make Abruzzo very different to Dublin, Ireland, where I’m from. And the exercise described above helps me find them.

Here are eleven photos I took on 15th March last, over a 30 minute period. Each photo was taken within a 5 minute walk of where I was staying in Loreto Aprutino (PE). You might think that the pictures of the cat and the dog could’ve been taken anywhere, but since they bark and meow in an Abruzzese dialect I don’t think so!

At this stage anyone who reads this blog realises that I’m interested in photography. I rarely go anywhere without a camera. I use a Canon 400D mostly, but if that is hard to carry I use a much smaller Canon IXUS 970 IS.

The 400D is like an old friend these days. I’ve had it quite a while and although camera technology has improved a lot since it came out I don’t see me changing it soon.

All the photos above were taken with the Canon 400D. But they could so easily be taken with a basic compact or even a mobile phone camera.

Looking at the photos I took I can see that doors and churches dominate. But that’s what caught my eye on that particular day. This exercise can be repeated regularly and each time something new will catch the eye. Sometimes the same subject taken from a different angle or height will reveal more of its hidden characteristics.

Different days, different light and different seasons can all ensure that nothing remains exactly the same.

If you give the exercise a go, let me know how you get on.
