Imagine you’re in Abruzzo. You’ve stopped off somewhere to get a bite to eat. You’ve decided to sit outside a local restaurant; the menu is small but looks good. The sun is shining, it’s warm, but there’s a nice cool breeze. A glass of wine seems right.
You have to make the “difficult” choice of red or white. But once you get over that hurdle, and assuming you haven’t changed your mind, the chances are you’ll be served Trebbiano or Pecorino if you go for white, and Montepulciano d’Abruzzo if you go for red.
I like wine, but I’m no expert. Some varieties I can identify; probably more by luck than anything else. But to give you an idea of what these wines from Abruzzo taste like here are my thoughts:
- Trebbiano: very tasty
- Pecorino: I like that too
- Montepulciano d’Abruzzo: oh that’s really nice
So I haven’t been much help, have I? Well maybe I have. You see I think these wines are very good indeed, and although I could attempt to describe them, or I could copy an expert’s description, I’m not going to do that. I’d just like to encourage you to give them a go, so that you can decide for yourself.
The whites, especially the Trebbiano, go great with fish. In fact a friend of mine from Abruzzo says that you should drink white wine with pesce (fish) and as an aperitivo (aperitif), and that’s it. When I asked about chicken he said no – Montepulcano d’Abruzzo works well with everything!
If you are lucky enough to be in Abruzzo it makes sense to pair your food up with Abruzzo wine. Food and wine from the same region naturally work well together. The Abruzzese have been producing wine for centuries and they’re pretty good at it.
If you are elsewhere and you fancy a treat, put together your favourite Italian dish, and try a wine from Abruzzo. These wines don’t break the bank. Yes they’d be cheaper in Abruzzo, but if you’re not there this is a worthy plan B.

I like your wine reviews!
* Trebbiano: very tasty
* Pecorino: I like that too
* Montepulciano d’Abruzzo: oh that’s really nice
Much easier to understand than all those fruity bouquet, chocolatey nose, lemony Elephants perfume type wine reviews! Which, if you are not a serious expert on wine, are just plain bamboozling.
“Montepulciano d’Abruzzo: oh that’s really nice” – easy to understand, and very true too!
Good stuff!
Best,
Alex
