What type of food will you find in Abruzzo? Well there is a wide range of options available and my experience is the Abruzzese have the ability to turn simple ingredients into fabulous dishes.
Pasta seems to dominate, but antipasti of various vegetables is common. Aubergines, pumpkin, beans, broccoli, onion and tomatoes are often used. Lamb and pork are common for the meat course. And there is no shortage of fish choices along the coast.
One of my favourite do-it-yourself starters is bread, drizzled (be heavy handed) with olive oil from Abruzzo, and sprinkled with salt. Simple, but fantastic.
Sometimes the cuisine is described as peasant food or rustic. It possibly is, but I love dishes that are prepared in simple way, using local produce.
Look out for the peperoncino (hot red pepper) is used to flavor many dishes. Another favourite is pasta with aglio, olio, and peperoncino (garlic, olive oil and hot red pepper), it has a bit of a kick.
Buon appetito!
